[image=930St1hoOn] Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Tony Rice - 1993 – The Pizza Tapes (2000) HDTracks, 24 bits, 88.2 KHz Legend has it that a pizza delivery boy lifted Jerry Garcia's cassette tape of two evenings worth of very special music from his kitchen counter, thus paving its way into underground tape trading circles and giving a handle to these incredible performances. Now at last, from the vaults of Dawg Studios comes the sonically superb official release of this historic jam session, the only meeting of guitar greats Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice, introduced to each other by their mutual friend and musical associate, mandolinist/ producer David Grisman. The Pizza Tapes capture these virtuosos at a rare moment in time, free of pressure, hassles or any given agenda other than making music and having plenty of fun. Jerry sings several tunes not only unique to his repertoire but captured here for the first and only time: "Long Black Veil," "House of the Rising Sun," and "Man of Constant Sorrow." Along with the folk/country classics "Rosa Lee McFall," "Little Sadie," and "Louis Collins" are jazz-infused versions of "So What," "Summertime" (a Garcia/ Rice guitar duet) and several free-form extended trio improvisations. Emotional renderings of "Amazing Grace" and Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" add the final topping to this already spicy pie; and with the tape left rolling, the listener is literally right in the studio with the guys as they let it all hang out in between tunes-it's like getting extra toppings for free! The Pizza Tapes is a landmark recording and one of Acoustic Disc's best sounding releases. Get it while it's hot! (HDTracks) Track list: 01 - Appetizer 1 02 - Man of Constant Sorrow 03 - Appetizer 2 04 - Louis Collins 05 - Shady Jam 06 - Shady Grove 07 - Always Late 08 - Guitar Space Summertime 09 - Appetizer 3 10 - Long Black Veil 11 - Rosa Lee McFall 12 - Appetizer 4 13 - Drifting Too Far from the S 14 - Amazing Grace 15 - Little Sadie 16 - Knockin on Heavens Door 17 - Space Jam 18 - So What 19 - Appetizer 5 20 - House of the Rising Sun Enjoy and share!

Within are two complete shows by the group and opening duet act Bob Weir and bassist Rob Wasserman September 5 at the Hartford Civic Center, and the following evening at the Nassau Coliseum in New York. Taken together they provide irrefutable evidence of what fans already knew: that the JGB‘s flowering musical evolution peaked about this time, with the guitarist playing better than he had in years inside and outside the Grateful Dead. The box is set up with three discs devoted to each night. Discs one and four are devoted to the Weir/Wasserman opening sets; the rest reflect the two sets Garcia‘s band played each night. The Weir/Wasserman gigs are delightfully ragged — Bob‘s guitar is slightly out of tune on half of the first night, especially on an otherwise moving version of “Looks Like Rain,” but the performances are inspired nonetheless — check “Throwing Stones” and “K.C. Moan” in Hartford and “When I Paint My Masterpiece,” and “Easy to Slip” that gives way to a long Wasserman improv in New York. The bassist is the highlight in this duet; he uses a boundless and heartfelt creativity in each song, making Weir invest his voice fully in the lyrics. To be honest, save for hardcore Deadheads, these gigs need only be heard a couple of times, and are included more for historical than musical import. The Garcia Band sets, however, are positively electric, crackling with energy and an obvious awareness among all players that what is transpiring is special. There are too many highlights to list — there isn’t a lot of overlap in the performances — only “The Harder They Come” (both versions are stunners), “Evangeline,” and “Deal” are repeated. The Bob Dylan tunes — “Forever Young” and “I Shall Be Released” — are excellent, as are “Like a Road,” “Deal,” and a rarity of sorts: a killer performance of Delaney & Bonnie‘s “Lonesome and a Long Way from Home,” which hadn’t been played live by the group in six years. The New York show features great reads of Van Morrison‘s “And It Stoned Me,” the Beatles‘ “Dear Prudence,” Smokey Robinson‘s “I Second That Emotion,” Holland-Dozier-Holland‘s “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You),” and the Ray Charles‘ nugget, “That Lucky Old Sun.” The sound throughout is thoroughly remastered from soundboard tapes and is crystalline. The booklet is nothing special — there’s a historical essay by Blair Jackson and memorabilia reproductions, but that’s about it. It’s clearly the music that matters. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Jerry Garcia & David Grisman - Arabia [16:23] Playing Time.........: 58:28 Total Size...........: 302.22 MB --------------------------------------------------------------------- Jerry Garcia achieved monumental accomplishments over a prolific career, yet the guitarist never sounded better than on his first official collaboration with longtime friend and fellow instrumental maestro David Grisman. Indeed, contemporary interest in roots music can be directly traced to this stellar Grammy-nominated 1991 collaboration. Putting distinctive rustic spins on pop standards, blues classics, and folk staples, the kindred musical spirits’ earnest authenticity and relaxed intimacy are matched only by virtuosic playing and superb production. Unadorned with any post-production tricks or overdubs, Garcia/Grisman breathes with naturalism and presence. You will effortlessly detect the full body of the instruments, witness… the woody grain textures, and get lost in the surprisingly velvety qualities of Garcia’s lullaby-like singing. Pals since the mid-1960s, Garcia and Grisman bonded over their love for traditional folk and bluegrass. The two teamed up amidst what became a gold rush of top-notch productivity and creativity for Garcia. Partnering with bassist Jim Kerwin and percussionist/fiddler Joe Craven, the pair approaches every passage with innate ease, as if either musician could finish the others sentence. The affable chemistry and soothing interplay wash over a selection of songs as notable for their diversity as the way Garcia and “Dawg” turn them into the equivalent of old friends you haven’t seen in years. Exquisite melodies and jewel-shaped notes decorate the simple, convivial structures of tunes that hop, jump, skip, skitter, and bop. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the legendary gypsy-jazz exchanges between Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, and equally sharp. Swirling with Middle Eastern modality, the closing 16-minute-plus rendition of Grisman’s rippling “Arabia”—complete with a section based on a Cuban fold theme—is alone enough worth the price of admission to this sensational session. But there’s so much more. The quartet delves into Celtic themes (“Two Soldiers”), jazz-grass (“Grateful Dawg”), old-world ballads (“Russian Lullaby”), and Appalachian flavors (“Walkin’ Boss”) with nonpareil skill and soulfulness. Garcia and Grisman’s tandem picking throughout epitomize sublime. And for many listeners, the duo’s revised version of the Grateful Dead staple “Friend of the Devil” ranks as the finest-ever recorded, the pace patient, the narrative vocals heartfelt, and the synchronous solos tailor-made for the enveloping progression. Better yet, it’s all captured in astonishing fidelity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Jerry Garcia Band - Dear Prudence [10:23] Playing Time.........: 02:37:27 Total Size...........: 1718.66 MB --------------------------------------------------------------------- Guitarist, singer, and songwriter Jerry Garcia was best known as a founding member of the Grateful Dead, the rock band for which he served as de facto leader for 30 years, 1965-1995. Concurrently for much of that time, he also led his own Jerry Garcia Band (JGB), and he performed and recorded in a variety of configurations and a variety of styles, particularly styles of folk and country music, sometimes switching to banjo or pedal steel guitar for the purpose... The first release from the newly-launched Garcia Live series features a recording from the historic Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey on March 1, 1980. The band performed an early and a late show on this evening, as was common at the time. The shows were originally multi-tracked on a 24-track mobile rig for WNEW's broadcast of the early show. The band, which included Garcia on guitar and vocals, partner in crime John Kahn on bass, Ozzie Ahlers on Keys and Johnny de Foncesca on drums at the time, was wrapping up a three-week East Coast run with the performances on this evening. Highlights including a take on the Jimmie Rodgers penned rave-up, "That's All Right," an early show encore of "Deal" and a rollicking version of "That's What Love Will Make You Do" show Jerry and the band loose and fluid at the end of the tour. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

David Crosby - Voyage 2006 / 3CD Box Set / Anthology 1968 - 2004 / feat. The Byrds, CSNY, Jerry Garcia # DrBn

“Voyage”, is a career spanning 3 CD David Crosby box set. The first CD moves with unremitting elegance from The Byrds, through CSN and CSNY, to 1971’s If I Could Only Remember My Name and then to the three LPs Crosby & Nash cut between 1972 and ’76. The audacious and exquisite … Name alone features Neil Young and Graham Nash, members of the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Santana and one-time flame Joni Mitchell. The second CD takes some liberties with the chronological approach in order to bring some flow to the music Crosby made intermittently in the subsequent three decades, between endless freebase hits, a prison term, liver failure and his downright miraculous recovery. The big surprise provided by these 15 little-heard and critically dismissed tracks is that, during even the worst of times, Crosby was able to come up with songs and vocal arrangements that echoed his halcyon days. There are revelations aplenty among the 16 previously unreleased tracks on the third CD. Demos of “Long Time Gone,” “Déjà Vu” and “Triad” expose Crosby’s wispy, asymmetrical song structures, as well as the degree to which this born collaborator relied on his mates – notably, fellow genius/fuck-up Stephen Stills – for the solidity they provided. Live renditions of Crosby & Nash’s “The Lee Shore” and “Traction In The Rain” from 1971 are poetically pristine, and a scintillating 2002 workout on “Dream For Him” by CSNY could’ve come from 30 years earlier. There’s also a delightful outtake from …Name – the wistful, vocally adventurous “Kids And Dogs”, with heady guitar accompaniment from Jerry Garcia. But the real mindblower is an alternate take of …Name’s “Cowboy Movie”, in which Crosby sings his ample ass off, clearly inspired by the breathtaking guitar interplay of Garcia and Neil Young, both in absolutely peak form, while Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart manage to keep the roof from blowing off. David Crosby Voyage 2006 Anthology 1968 – 2004 [image=ZF8lqaPXuO] 3CD Box Set / 2006 / 320Kbps Disc 1 / Essential: 1. Jerry Garcia & David Grisman - Shady Grove (1996) [FLAC] {Full Scans}

Review by William Ruhlmann [-] In the last five years of his life, Jerry Garcia frequently dropped in on his old friend, mandolin player David Grisman, to play and record the kind of folk, bluegrass, and old-timey music they had both begun their careers with in the early '60s. Grisman released two Garcia/Grisman albums on his Acoustic Disc label during Garcia's lifetime, and this is the first to be compiled since his death. In a note, Grisman writes, "I decided to organize this material by genre; this first volume is comprised of traditional folk songs and ballads." Indeed, among the 13 tracks here are versions of children's ballads and other ancient songs that formed the repertoire of some of the folk groups that both players belonged to. Grisman has included a lavish CD booklet containing thorough annotations by New Lost City Ramblers member John Cohen that trace the origins of each of the songs and detail Garcia and Grisman's backgrounds. One gets the sense that Cohen and Grisman are trying to provide a tutorial to Deadheads who may be puzzled. The effect of all the scholarship is to imply that the sessions are more deliberate than a hearing suggests, however. The playing is loose and spontaneous, and Garcia is not always in the best voice. Nevertheless, Grisman is right to begin his documentation of Garcia's last sessions with an album that ties directly into the guitarist's initial musical passions.
